How many days is the Qurban slaughtering period during Eid al-Adha?

According to the Hanafi madhhab, the slaughtering period for Qurban is 3 days: the 10th, 11th, and 12th days of Dhu al-Hijjah. According to the Shafi’i madhhab, this period extends up to 4 days and includes the 13th day.

To whom is Qurban slaughtering wajib (obligatory)?

Slaughtering a Qurban is wajib for Muslim men and women who are sane, free, resident (not a traveler), and possess wealth to the degree that fitra becomes wajib. Those who possess 80.14 grams of gold or property of the same value beyond their basic and essential needs (house, household items, vehicle, three sets of clothing, one year’s sustenance) and debts are subject to this ruling. If the Qurban is not slaughtered within its time and its value is given as sadaqah, the worship is not considered performed.

Which animals can be sacrificed as Qurban?

Animals that can be sacrificed as Qurban are sheep, goats, cattle, water buffalo (jamus), and camels. Sheep and goats must have completed one year of age, cattle and water buffalo two years, and camels five years. If a lamb is large and cannot be distinguished from a one-year-old sheep, having completed six months is sufficient. While up to seven people can share in cattle, water buffalo, and camels; sheep and goats do not accept shares and can only be sacrificed on behalf of a single person.

How is a proxy (wakalah) for Qurban given?

Proxy for Qurban can be given verbally, in writing, via telephone, or over the internet. When an online proxy is given through an institution, the proxy is considered transferred to the institution according to fiqh as of the moment the donation is made. It is essential that the proxy is given before the Qurban slaughtering time.

How is Qurban meat distributed?

According to classical fiqh sources, dividing the Qurban meat into three parts is considered mustahabb (recommended): one-third is given as sadaqah, one-third is gifted to relatives and friends, and one-third is fed to family members for whom the provider is responsible. It is also permissible to gift a portion of the Qurban meat or donate it entirely. If the person slaughtering the Qurban is in need themselves, it is seen as better and mustahabb for them to feed the Qurban to their household.

What should a wealthy person who could not slaughter a Qurban do?

A wealthy Muslim who could not perform the slaughter even though the Qurban slaughtering time has passed should give the market value of the Qurban on that day to the poor as sadaqah. This situation serves as a Shari’a license in terms of fulfilling the wajib.
