RAMADAN AL-SHARIF

Fidyah

Fidyah is the material compensation paid when the worship of fasting or hajj cannot be fulfilled completely. Fidyah refers to the ransom paid to alleviate someone’s difficulty. Therefore, one fidyah is the amount that meets a person’s daily food requirement. This amount is the same as the amount of sadaqat al-fitr.

The Holy Quran and Fidyah

In the Holy Quran, fidyah is described as follows:
“(Fasting is) for a fixed number of days. But whoever of you is ill, or on a journey, (shall fast) a (like) number of other days. And upon those who are able to fast, but with hardship, is a fidyah (ransom), the feeding of a needy person. And whoever volunteers good, it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 184)
