Qurban Prayer
Acts of Worship Recommended After the Sacrifice Is Slaughtered
- The Prayer to Be Performed
After the owner of the sacrifice slaughters his qurban, or has someone else slaughter it on his behalf;
“When you slaughter your sacrifice, set down the knife in your hand. Then pray two rak’ahs. Whichever Muslim prays these two rak’ahs and then asks something of Allah the Exalted, Allah the Exalted will surely grant that person what he has asked for.”
In following this noble Hadith, it is mustahabb (commendable) to pray two rak’ahs.
In the first rak’ah of the prayer, after al-Fatihah, Surah al-Kawthar (“Inna a’taynā..”) is recited; in the second rak’ah, Surah al-Ikhlas (“Qul huwa Allahu ahad..”) is recited.
After this prayer;

“Allâhümme hâze’l-kebşu, (ev hâze’l-bakaru, ev hâze’l-ma’zü) minke ve leke ve ileyke. Fetekabbel minnî bilutfike ve keramike kemâ tekabbelte min İbrâhîme Halîlike ve İsmâîle Zebîhıke ve Muhammedin Habîbike bifazlike ve cûdike ve keramike Yâ Ekrame’l-Ekramin”
This supplication is recited, and one prays for both religious and worldly needs. (Ziyâ-i Ma’nevî)
Qurban Prayer
- The Distribution of the Sacrificial Meat
It is mustahabb to divide the sacrificial meat into three parts.
1) One third is given as sadaqah (charity).
2) One third is given as a gift or a feast to relatives and friends.
3) The remaining third is fed to one’s family and children, who are under one’s care. (Badâ’i)
It is permissible to gift a portion of the sacrificial meat or to donate it entirely. If the person making the sacrifice is in need, it is preferable (afdal) and mustahabb for him to feed the qurban to his household. (Hindiyya, Badâ’i, Tahtâwî)
If one of the partners in a shared sacrifice dies before the qurban is slaughtered, the sacrifice is valid if it is slaughtered with the permission of the eldest of his heirs. (Hindiyya)
If a person dies after purchasing a qurban but before slaughtering it, the sacrifice becomes part of the estate and passes to the heirs. If the heirs slaughter it on their own behalf, it is permissible. (Nazm-ı Zendûsî)
- The Distribution of a Sacrifice Slaughtered in Partnership
When a sacrifice is slaughtered in partnership, distributing its meat by estimation is not permissible; it must be divided by weighing.
However, if along with the meat each share includes a portion of the hide, feet, head, liver, or the fat and tripe, then dividing by estimation becomes permissible. (Qâzîkhân and others)
If they cook and eat all the meat together without dividing it, that is permissible.
If a person purchases a bovine with the intention of sacrificing it for himself, his family, and his elder children, dividing its meat is not required.
