What Is the Eid Prayer?
The Eid prayer is a two-rak’ah prayer performed on the morning of the festival. The three additional takbirs said in each of its two rak’ahs are called the “zawa’id takbirs.” These takbirs, which are wajib, are said in the first rak’ah before the recitation and in the second rak’ah after the recitation.
How Is the Eid Prayer Performed?
The Eid prayer is performed as follows: After making the intention in one’s heart by saying, “I intend to perform the Eid prayer for the sake of Allah; I follow the imam,” one says “Allahu Akbar” and makes the opening takbir together with the imam. Then the hands are folded, and after the “Subhanaka,” the imam aloud and the congregation silently say “Allahu Akbar,” raising the hands to the ears and letting them drop to the sides; raising the hands again, the second takbir is said and the hands are let drop to the sides; when the third takbir is said, the hands are folded. The imam recites aloud the noble Fatiha and an added surah (one surah or at least three verses), and the congregation listens. After the ruku and the prostration, one rises for the second rak’ah.
In the second rak’ah the imam recites first the noble Fatiha, then an added surah (one surah or at least three verses). Then the takbir is said three times, and the hands are let drop to the sides after each takbir; with the fourth takbir one goes into ruku and the prayer is completed.
The sermon (khutbah) is delivered before the prayer in the Friday prayer, but after the prayer in the Eid prayers. The sermon begins with a takbir, and the congregation also joins in these takbirs in a low voice.
