A Sip of Life
Access to water is the greatest right of every living being. Where there is water, there is life and health…
Since the dawn of world history, all great civilizations have taken shape along waterways, and states have been founded accordingly. Yet over the past century, water resources have declined sharply for many reasons. Like all living things, we human beings are affected by this.
The Value of Water
In developing regions with arid climates, the hardship is felt far more acutely. Farming cannot be done for lack of water, and many people, especially children, who cannot access clean drinking water lose their lives to epidemic diseases.
The Greatest Prayer
Water is among the greatest blessings bestowed upon creation. Our ancestors’ prayer for one who offers water, “May you be as precious as water, my child,” points to this.
Likewise, when Sa’d ibn Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), one of the noble Companions, came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked, “O Messenger of Allah, my mother has passed away. Which charity is most virtuous on her behalf?” the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “Water.” So Sa’d had a well dug and said, “This is for my mother.” (Sunan Abu Dawud)
The Duty That Falls to Us
The duty that falls to us is to know the value of the water we have and not to waste it.
Share your bread and it becomes a meal; share your water and it becomes life. To share water is to share life.
