Suhoor is the final time for eating and drinking right before starting the fast in the month of Ramadan. Suhoor is observed just before the start of the fasting period known as the time of imsak. The time of imsak is the last moments before the sun rises, and fasting begins after the time of imsak. Muslims fast throughout the day by having suhoor before the time of imsak. Suhoor helps fasting individuals maintain their energy throughout the day.
In order to calculate the prayer times of a place, the results of the “observed value” in accordance with Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) criteria are taken as the basis, not the “astronomical values”. For example, for sunrise and sunset, the ‘observed sunrise-sunset’ at the highest inhabited place in a town is the basis, not the ‘astronomical sunrise-sunset’. The values obtained only by calculating astronomical values cannot meet the jurisprudential criteria due to many factors such as altitude and land width that cause them to deviate. For this reason, Islamic scholars have taken some necessary measures to secure the boundaries of prayer times. These measures and corrections are called “temkin” (precaution). Temkin is not a correction made to be more cautious, but a necessary correction to be made according to Islamic jurisprudence. The values that emerge after these corrections become compliant with jurisprudential criteria. Therefore, it is necessary to use the precautionary times.
Anas bin Malik (r.a.) narrated: Zayd bin Thabit (r.a.) said: We had suhoor with the Prophet (s.a.w.). Then he stood up for the morning prayer. I asked Zayd: “How much time was there between suhoor and the adhan?” Zayd (r.a.) replied, “Enough time to recite fifty verses.” (In the Translation of Sahih al-Bukhari Mukhtasar Tajrid al-Sarih, it is written that the time it takes to recite fifty verses is 18 minutes; vol. 6, pp. 268-269)
From this, the importance of observing temkin is understood.
