What is Wajib Qurban?
It is the sacrifice of five types of animals [sheep, goat, cattle, camel, buffalo (camus)] on the 10th, 11th, and 12th days and the 11th and 12th nights of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah with the intention of worship and drawing closer to Allah.
What is the Ruling on Qurban?
Sacrificing a qurban is wajib. For it is stated in the noble hadith:
“If a person has the means to sacrifice a qurban and does not do so, let him certainly not approach our mosque (that is, us).”
In another noble hadith, it is stated, “He will not attain our intercession.”
The qurban is fulfilled only by sacrificing an animal suitable for qurban.
QURBAN GUIDE
The nisab of qurban (that is, the amount of wealth required for qurban to become wajib):
To have wealth equal to the amount at which sadaqat al-fitr (fitrah) becomes wajib. Unlike the nisab for zakat, it is not necessary for this wealth to be of the type that can increase through trade, nor does a year need to pass over it. If a person becomes wealthy at the end of the days designated for sacrificing qurban, it immediately becomes wajib to sacrifice a qurban. (Qadi Khan)
The animals designated for qurban are sheep, goats, cattle, buffalo (camus), and camels. Sheep and goats are sacrificed at one year of age, cattle and buffalo at two years of age, and camels at five years of age. However, if a lamb is large and cannot be distinguished from a one-year-old sheep, it becomes eligible for qurban when it completes six months. (Wahdeti) Sheep and goats do not accept shares. One sheep or one goat serves as a qurban for one person. One cattle, one buffalo, or one camel serves as a qurban for seven people. That is, seven people can jointly sacrifice a cattle or a camel. The partners can be odd, even, or fewer than seven. (Hindiyya)
2) To lead it to the place of slaughter with respect.
3) To slaughter it oneself if capable.
4) If unable to slaughter, to appoint a competent person as a proxy and be present oneself during the slaughter.
Our Master, the Pride of the Universe (pbuh), said: “O Fatimah, stand and witness the sacrifice of your qurban. For with the first drop of its blood that falls to the ground, every sin you have committed is forgiven and pardoned.”
