Löh and Hafiz Education in Africa

Löh Boards
and African Students
Hafiz Journey

In many parts of Africa, especially in rural areas, students use a special educational tool when learning to read and memorize the Holy Quran: Löh boards.

What are Löh Boards?

Löh is a rectangular or oval board, usually made of wood. Students write verses or suras on this board using a special ink. This ink is usually prepared with a mixture of water and charcoal, and the writing is washed clean when the memorization process is complete. In this way, the board can be used again and again.

The Role of Löh Boards in Hafiz Education

Hafizah means memorizing the entire Holy Quran and this process is considered a major spiritual and academic goal for many African students. Löh boards are an important tool to guide the students on this journey. Every day, the students write down the verses they need to memorize, memorize them under the guidance of their teachers, and then erase them to make room for new ones.

This daily process is time-consuming and can prolong the memory process.

Conveniences of Printed Holy Quran

While traditional methods are still practiced in many places, the widespread availability of printed Qur'ans has greatly facilitated the learning process.

  • Ease of Access: Printed Qur'ans provide a great advantage for students due to their portability and widespread availability. Each student can have their own book and the learning process becomes more personalized.
  • Time Saving: While writing and erasing on the board takes time, with the printed Qur'an, students can work directly on the text.
  • Longevity: Löh boards can wear out over time as they have to be used over and over again. The printed Qur'an, however, is a durable resource that can be used for many years.

While the depth and spiritual bonds gained with the looh boards are preserved, the conveniences provided by the printed Quran allow new generations to interact more with the Quran. Therefore, the teaching and memorization of the Holy Quran is possible through the spread of the printed Quran.
